Farming for the future.
Red Bird Acres was founded in 2013 by Robin and Laura Sage. As former outdoor educators who remain passionate about the environment and its inhabitants, we consider our farm to be first and foremost mission driven. We believe in the importance of aligning our thoughts and actions: we began farming on the belief that it is necessary for environmental and human health to transition our agricultural system back to being based on small local economies where promoting human and animal health are at the forefront.
We believe in farming practices that go beyond organic and take a holistic approach that respects and fosters the health of the land, the animals we care for and the people who eat our food. Our livestock are raised using high-welfare, low-stress animal husbandry practices. We utilize a pasture-based, rotational grazing system for our animals and are Animal Welfare Approved.
We are also inspired by our passion for great food. We strive to raise animals that have the highest standard of life and in turn produce meat that is unsurpassed in quality and flavor.
Our current focus is on pastured poultry and hogs. We operate our farm on leased pasture located between Corvallis and Philomath Oregon.
meet the farmers
A west coast native, Laura was raised in California's Bay Area in Oakland. She attended UC Santa Cruz in pursuit of a degree in Women's Studies prior to transferring to Prescott College to complete her degree in Adventure Education. She resided in the southwest for a decade and worked as a wilderness EMT prior to moving to Oregon. A small dairy enthusiast, she maintains a herd of ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Raised in Illinois, Robin heeded the call of the mountains and made his way out west 15 years ago. He has a degree in Wilderness Leadership and Cultural Geography from Prescott College. He worked as a climbing & mountaineering guide and outdoor educator prior to becoming a full time farmer. An avid cyclist he often spends his free time studying maps and planning routes for his next bike packing adventure in the coast range.
Shasta, our Maremma/Pyreness livestock guardian dog, joined Red Bird Acres as a 12 week old pup in 2015. She has developed into an integral member of the farm team - we can't envision doing this without her. Specializing in poultry she is ever vigilant over the safety of her flock.
Lassen, an Italian Maremma, joined the farm as an 8 week old pup Winter 2018. He easily took to Shasta and under her mentorship he is developing into a reliable and brave guardian. He is a bit of a goofball and lover of human attention but also gentle with the livestock and has an impressively deep bark. He fits right in.
